NEW CITY CATECHISM #29

Question: How can we be saved?

Answer: Only by faith in Jesus Christ and in his substitutionary atoning death on the cross; so even though we are guilty of having disobeyed God and are still inclined to all evil, nevertheless, God, without any merit of our own but only by pure grace, imputes to us the perfect righteousness of Christ when we repent and believe in him.

Scripture Memory Verse: Ephesians 2:8–9.

WEEKLY DISCIPLESHIP RESOURCES

Here are a few discipleship resources our elders recommend checking out this week.

  1. How Do I Pursue a Discipling Relationship in My Church? - It’s both a privilege and a joy to know that God is making us like his Son. And it is his tender and loving gesture to give us help along the way.

  2. Why Nothing on Earth Will Satisfy - When nothing on earth satisfies, what do we do? We look above the earth. We look to God, which is precisely what God intended. He created us with desires so big that they can be fulfilled only in him.

  3. The Most Radical Mission For Christians May Be The Most Mundane - There are many “ordinary” ways to be ambassadors of the extraordinary gospel, but none more important than building up the body of Christ by committing to a local church, however “boring” it may seem.

Please read them and use them as discipleship opportunities to discuss with one another.

Hampton Roads Fellowship was recently blessed with the opportunity of being gifted a church building for our congregation. Would you help us raise the necessary funds to be able to make this building our new church home?

NEW CITY CATECHISM #28

Question: What happens after death to those not united to Christ by faith?

Answer: At the day of judgment they will receive the fearful but just sentence of condemnation pronounced against them. They will be cast out from the favorable presence of God, into hell, to be justly and grievously punished, forever.

Scripture Memory Verse: John 3:16–18, 36.

WEEKLY DISCIPLESHIP RESOURCES

Here are a few discipleship resources our elders recommend checking out this week.

  1. Legalism and Consistent Spiritual Habits: Not the Same - Satan is a thief and he will use legalism to steal, kill and destroy life as often as he can. That said, please consider this warning: Satan can also use a false definition of legalism to keep us from consistently engaging the habits that lead to life.

  2. 4 Ways to Read the Bible for Personal Application - Learning to wisely apply the harder, less relevant passages has a surprising benefit. Your whole Bible “applies personally.” This Lord is your God; this history is your history; these people are your people; this Savior has brought you in to participate in who he is and what he does.

  3. Five Ways Congregational Worship Shapes Us - All of life is worship, but God has uniquely suited corporate worship to shape us as a church. Here are five ways congregational worship shapes our lives.

Please read them and use them as discipleship opportunities to discuss with one another.

NEW CITY CATECHISM #26

Question: Are all people, just as they were lost through Adam, saved through Christ??

Answer: No, only those who are elected by God and united to Christ by faith. Nevertheless God in his mercy demonstrates common grace even to those who are not elect, by restraining the effects of sin and enabling works of culture for human well-being.

Scripture Memory Verse: Romans 5:17.

WEEKLY DISCIPLESHIP RESOURCES

Here are a few discipleship resources our elders recommend checking out this week.

  1. 10 Things You Should Know about the J-Curve - Like the letter J, Jesus’s life descends through his incarnation and then death, and then upward into his resurrection and exaltation. The "j" curve is the shape of the Christian life.

  2. What Our Search for Belonging Reveals - We belong not to ourselves but to God, and through him, to his people. At long last, our search for true belonging can have a happy ending. In Christ and among his people, we’re fully known and fully loved.

  3. Words That Improve Friendship - God has a bigger agenda for our friendships than we do. These relationships are designed to be workrooms for redemption, not shelters for human happiness.

Please read them and use them as discipleship opportunities to discuss with one another.
